Lesson 10 - AN/PVS-7 and AN/PVS-14 – Guiding the Dark for over Three Decades
In the world of night vision technology, the AN/PVS-7 and AN/PVS-14 stand tall as iconic milestones. Since their inception in the mid-80s, these incredible devices have illuminated the darkest corners of the Earth, aiding soldiers, law enforcement, and adventurers alike. Let's dive into the fascinating world of these night vision wonders.
The Birth of AN/PVS-7 and AN/PVS-14
Back in 1985, the U.S. military awarded production contracts to ITT/Varo Joint Venture and Litton to replace the aging PVS-5 night vision systems. In response, ITT delivered the AN/PVS-7B, and Litton introduced the AN/PVS-7A. These revolutionary devices weighed a mere 680 grams and were single-tube, bi-ocular night vision goggles based on Generation III image intensifier tubes (known as the MX-10130). But what made them truly remarkable was their optical system, which utilized prisms, collimators, and advanced lenses to provide a simulated binocular vision.
AN/PVS-7B: The Game Changer
The AN/PVS-7B took night vision to the next level with its upgraded electronics. It featured a high light level protection circuit within a self-contained, passive image intensifier device. This innovation allowed users to amplify existing ambient light, enabling night operations with unparalleled clarity. Moreover, these night vision goggles included an infrared (IR) light illuminator, granting operators close-in visibility even in complete darkness. To combat fogging, demist shields were introduced on the eyepiece ocular lenses.
AN/PVS-14: A Versatile Marvel
Fast forward to the AN/PVS-14, which has become one of the most versatile night vision monoculars ever designed. Widely used in combat infantry units, it offers a lightweight solution for night vision needs. Beyond the military, it has found a home in law enforcement agencies worldwide.
The AN/PVS-14 is a multi-functional powerhouse. It can be handheld, head-mounted, helmet-mounted, or even affixed and bore-sighted to a rifle with an aiming light. For extended range observation missions, operators can opt for 3x or 6x magnifiers. Additional features include an infrared LED with an LED indicator and a low battery indicator, ensuring users are always in control.
The Legacy Continues
From the initial fielding of AN/PVS-7B in 1988 at Fort Hood to the massive production under OMNIBUS III and IV procurement contracts, these night vision goggles have been at the forefront of night vision technology. Notably, the AN/PVS-14 boasts the newly developed MX-11769 image tube with manual gain control, cementing its reputation as a top-tier night vision device.
Conclusion: Shaping the Future of Night Vision
As we reflect on the remarkable journey of the AN/PVS-7 and AN/PVS-14, it's clear that these devices have illuminated the path for countless individuals navigating the darkness. From military operations to law enforcement and outdoor enthusiasts, their impact is immeasurable. The legacy of innovation and adaptability they represent continues to inspire the future of night vision technology.
